Glider - Sailplane

The glider is without question the most performing motorless aircraft.

The glider has a very low descent rate and seems to never be going down. The very long wing confers it an undeniable charm but mainly serves to reduce its drag thus limiting its loss of altitude. . the goal being to remain in flight as long as possible!

A high performance sailplane can actually glide as much as 60 times its altitude, referred to as 60 to 1 glide ratio; in other words from an altitude of one kilometer, in calm conditions it will glide 60 kilometers.

With this in mind a sailplane pilot can take advantage of the rising currents of the atmosphere (thermals) or use the rising air triggered by hills and mountains enabling him to fly for hours and cover hundreds of kilometers in distance.
